U.S. Veteran

David Edward Nichols, age 64 of Robbinsville, went to Heaven on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, NC. He was a native of Blount Co. TN but resided for most of his life in Graham Co. NC. He was the son of the late Fred and Violet Slagle Nichols. David was a graduate of Stecoah High School and of Haywood Technical Institute. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, and after serving in Germany during the Vietnam War, David worked at Singer in Andrews and Bryson City, and then at Stanley Furniture in Robbinsville. A talented, self taught musician, David made many musical instruments and furniture items. In addition to being an avid genealogist, he was especially fond of carving, writing, videography, visiting residents of the local rest home, and serving his church in many ways. A member of Orr Branch Baptist Church, David was a devoted servant of Jesus Christ and ministered to others in many ways, including sharing his musical gifts. A special ministry of his was producing DVD’s and CD’s of the family history of his acquaintances and friends to preserve their heritage. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Capt. Kenny and Janet Camby Nichols of Asheville, NC; his daughter and her fiancé, Sherry Rogers and Mikey Freeman of Robbinsville, NC; grandchildren, Jonathan and Joshua Nichols of Asheville, NC, Bethany, Jesse, and Summer Rogers of Robbinsville, NC; sisters and their husbands, Frances and Terry Rogers of Clyde, NC, Ina and Jack Good of Gastonia, NC, and Marie and William Pelfry of Berea, KY. He is also survived by a niece, Jacqueline Good of Gastonia, NC; nephew, Eddie Pelfry of Richmond, KY; and niece, Mandy Pelfry-Quinton and her husband Russ Quinton of Richmond, KY. He leaves behind many friends and relatives throughout Western North Carolina and Blount, Co. TN. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, February 27, 2012 at the Townson-Smith Chapel. The Reverends Onley Williams and Michael Pannell will officiate. Burial will follow at the Metz Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 till 2:00 pm Monday at the Chapel prior to the services. Townson-Smith Funeral Home is charge of the arrangements.
