Arthur Jose Griffith, 73, of Lake Santeetlah, NC, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. He was born in Mobile, AL, and was the son of the late Rudolph J. Griffith of Vermont and Maria Louisa Cannales of Spain. He spent the early part of his life as a graphic artist creating such campaigns as the Coppertone Girl and the Esso/Exxon Tiger. He was a very successful real estate developer and spent his mid-life in the mountains with his dedicated wife by his side; Aura Griffith, as the owners of Thunderbird Mountain Resort in Santeetlah, NC. The first year the town of Santeetlah was incorporated, Arthur was elected as the mayor. The later part of his life was spent enjoying his collection of antique cars and traveling with his wife in his pride and joy, a customized Bluebird Tour bus which he restored from the ground up himself. His final moments were spent with his best friend and the love of his life, along with all of his children, surrounding him. He is survived by his wife, Aura Vasquez Griffith; his son and son-in-law, Randolph James and Robert Naylor of Charlotte, NC; his daughters and son-in-laws Jennifer and Larry McColskey of St. Augustine, FL, Jo Ann and Porfirio Vazquez of Miami, FL, and Aura Alfaro; his sister and brother-in-law Diana and Paul Trulock of Climax, GA. He has four grandchildren, Alexander Vazquez, Christopher Vazquez, Sage McColskey, and Chelsea Rodriguez, and great grand children; Hannah Vazquez, Chelsea Rodriguez, and Michael Alberto. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Monday, February 10, 2012 at the Townson-Smith Chapel. The Reverend Steve Holcomb will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday, February 9, 2014 at the Townson-Smith Chapel. Townson-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
