Bobby Cagle, Jr., age 83, of Robbinsville, NC, departed this earthly vale of tears to be with his dearly departed loved ones in the presence of the Lord on November 29, 2023. At the time of his death he was a resident of Graham Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Andrews, Cherokee County, North Carolina on March 17, 1940, the son of Bobby Cagle, Sr. and Anita Thompson Cagle Luther.
Bobby held a variety of jobs through his life, working as a house painter, assembly line worker for Magnavox and Baker Furniture, as Superintendent of Public Works for the Town of Robbinsville, and as a licensed heat and air technician. He and his wife also operated the Black Knight Drive-In in the 1960s. He retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation as a Maintenance Mechanic, responsible for maintaining agency facilities throughout Western North Carolina using his considerable talents at fixing most anything. While employed by DOT he was elected several times by his peers as Western Regional Delegate for the State Employees Association of North Carolina.
Bobby was known for his happy disposition, a quick sense of humor, and love of the boxer breed, especially his beloved dog, Brandy. He was always active in his community and was a long-time member and ordained deacon at First Baptist Church of Robbinsville. For more than 20 years, he served as an Alderman and Mayor of the Town of Robbinsville, overseeing many vital improvements to the community’s water and sewer infrastructure and obtaining millions of dollars in grants to complete the projects. He was a member and Past Master of the Robbinsville Masonic Lodge #672, a York Rite and Scottish Rite Mason, and member of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Mystic Shrine. He was one of the founding leaders of Graham County Little League baseball, softball, and T-ball and helped build the facilities which were later also used by the Graham County School system for those sports for many years. His love of sports and children led him to successfully coach many in youth league baseball and football. He was very proud that the youth football teams he coached were never defeated. Finally, throughout his life he was a devoted fan of the UNC Tarheels and could always be found watching their games any time they were televised, even in replays many times over.
Bobby is survived by his son, Bobby D. Cagle, of Los Angeles, CA, his sister Janice Phelps of Enfield, CT, his sisters-in law Nelly Darty of Hickory, NC, Lee Ellen Adams of Robbinsville, and Rhonda Jean Cagle of Taylorsville, NC, and many beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of more than 60 years, Lois Jenkins Cagle, by his brothers Jack and Roy Cagle, his beloved mother- and father-in- law Valarie Gribble Jenkins and Loyd Allen Jenkins, sisters- and brothers-in-law, Jerrie and Dale Laughter, Patricia and Leonard Colvin, Larry Adams, Bob Phelps, and Kim Jenkins, by his niece, Debbie Phelps Riley, and by his nephews, James Todd Colvin and Bryan Cagle.
The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Robbinsville on Tuesday, December 5 from 12 noon – 1:30 PM, followed by a service in celebration of his life starting at 1:30 PM. Interment will immediately follow at Lone Oak Cemetery.
