James Don Carver, 78, of Robbinsville, NC, passed peacefully at home on November 23, 2023, to spend Thanksgiving with his Heavenly Father. Don was born January 13, 1945 in Robbinsville, NC, to the late James and Julia Orr Carver.
He was a lifelong resident of Robbinsville, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 672 since 1980, and a deacon at New Hope Baptist Church where he taught others by example and the strength of his character. He lived a full life surrounded by family in a home that was filled with love and laughter.
Don was a hard worker who loved the Lord, the North Carolina Tar Heels, the Atlanta Braves and old westerns. He was affectionately known as Poppa/Pop to his children and grandchildren and adored his little dog, Chipper. He loved spending time each morning on the front porch in the swing drinking coffee, reading his bible, and praying.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, sister Merle Aldridge, and brother Max Carver. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Patricia Jeanette Nelms Carver, Robbinsville, NC, son and daughter-in-law, Terrance and Crystal Carver, Robbinsville, NC, daughter and son-in-law Beth and John Odom, Jasper, GA, grandsons Stewart Grant Carver and Zell Nelms Carver, Robbinsville, NC, and granddaughters Bryce Oleta Odom, Chatsworth, GA, and Keaten Haize Odom, Buford, GA, sister and brother-in-law Woody and G.D. Phillips, Robbinsville, NC. Several nephews, nieces, and other family members also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm, Sunday, November 26, 2023, at New Hope Baptist Church with Pastor Brian Stevens officiating. Jai Garza, Eddie Nelms, David Nelms, Matthew Hyde, Stewart Carver, and Zell Carver will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 at the church prior to the service.
