Kenneth McKown Obituary

Kenneth James McKown of Robbinsville, NC, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away Saturday, February 3, at the age of 72 in his home with a creek rolling gently by. During a four-month search (after deciding to leave and return to his roots in the east) he looked at 84 properties in NC, TN, and GA to find the ideal retirement home for him and his wife of 54 years and Robbinsville was the perfect fit. Kenneth was born in Norfolk, VA, left for Colorado in 2001 and settled in NC for his retirement years in 2018.

In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his brother Wayne McKown and William (Bill) Austin who he loved like a brother.  He is survived by his wife Deborah Thorley McKown; son James Bradley McKown; grandson Fenton Steve McKown; sister Deborah Burchett; brother Michael McKown; daughter-in-law Melissa Depriest McKown; very close friends Tom and Adrienne Pohrte, Dominic and Sheri Ferrara, Julie Thibodeau, Cindy and Dennis Perkins; and an abundance of wonderful nieces and nephews.

Ken was one of the oldest software developers in the U.S.  He continued his work in this field until his untimely death.  Living up to his nickname The Prince of Playfulness, his family and friends will miss his antics and humor.  Some of his favorite things were skiing, flying (he had his pilot's license), reading about history and past wars as well as everything computer related, playing cards and Mexican Train with his wife and son, and watching a good TV series while eating dinner.

Instead of flowers or other memorial contributions, please support your local animal shelter with donations.

Our final words to this wonderful and exceptional man are God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So, He put His arms around you and said gently come to Me.
