Mrs. Lena Colleen Moore Slaughter, age 90, of Fayetteville, GA passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2023.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Lester Slaughter, known as “Jim Tom” or Gene, and daughter, Larisa Ann Slaughter. She is survived by her daughter, Lynne Slaughter Padgett (Randolph) of Sterling, VA; grandchildren, Joseph Padgett and Joshua Padgett; sister, Joyce; nieces; and close family friends, Pat Phillips, Laurie Phillips, Mackenzie Byars, and Cameron Byars.
Lena trained as an x-ray and lab technician in North Carolina, and while teaching students met her future husband, Gene. They were happily married over 40 years until his death in 1997. Lena was known as a busy volunteer, serving throughout most of her adult life. When she retired, she became a charter volunteer at Piedmont Fayette Hospital and joined the local charity, Fayette Samaritans. She devoted many hours providing assistance to those in need, as well as serving in multiple leadership roles within these organizations.
Lena had a gift with plants; able to grow an entire plant from only a clipping. She loved the mountain laurel native to Gene’s hometown of Robbinsville and the windows of her home were lined with African violets. Unfortunately, this love of careful cultivation was not passed to her daughters, and her beloved rose bushes and tulip trees did not always survive Gene’s somewhat less than fully attentive lawn mowing. Many laughs were shared over the seemingly injured plants while Lena nursed them back to life.
Her family and friends, particularly her grandchildren, Joseph, Josh, Mackenzie, and Cameron (whom she considered her granddaughters) brought her delight. She will be missed by all who knew her. On earth she has left a legacy of deep relationships and service and is now at peace in Heaven with those who preceded her.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 29, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Parrott Funeral Home in Fairburn, GA. A Graveside Service will be held at the Old Mother Church Cemetery in Robbinsville, NC at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 30, 2023. Her ashes will be laid to rest alongside her husband and younger daughter.
