Helen Marie Plemmons (Jones) Thompson passed peacefully into eternal life in her heavenly home on Monday, January 9, 2023, at the home of her daughter Myrna Jones Baker in Houston, TX. She was 85 years old. Her husband, Marvin K. Jones Sr., age 86, entered eternal life three months earlier on October 18, 2022.
Helen was pre-deceased by her parents, Ruby and Merlin Plemmons of Candler, NC; her sister and brother-in-law Chris and Jim Messer of Candler, NC; her brothers, Ben Plemmons and Bill Plemons, both of Candler, NC and her husband Jack Thompson of McDonough, GA. Marvin Jones was pre-deceased by his parents, Reva Morgan Jones and Russell Clarence Jones.
Helen and Marvin’s memories are forever cherished by those who survive them. Their 3 children: Marvin Kenneth Jones Jr. (Tammy) of Cartersville, GA, Audrey Lynn Jones Acker Justice (Charlie) of Simpsonville, SC, Myrna Kay Jones Baker (Allen) of Houston, TX. Helen’s siblings Mike Plemmons (Deborah) of Candler, NC, and Anne Kirkland (Kenny) of Sharpsburg, GA, sisters-in-law, Barbara Plemmons and Linda Plemmons Thompson, both of Candler, NC. Their 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; Helen’s 2 step children, 4 step grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; and their countless beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
The entire family greatly misses Helen and Marvin (Nana and Papaw) and knows they are back together enjoying each other and with all those who pre deceased them, laughing and enjoying the peace of each day. Helen and Marvin loved and cared deeply for others through their lives. Helen had the gift of hospitality, was a nurturer of family, friends, flora, and fauna. She gave of herself to serve in many ways but notably as an ordained Deacon in the Episcopal church, as a manager of Helping in His Name Food Pantry in McDonough, GA, and as director of volunteers at the Sacred Journey Hospice, also in McDonough, GA; and prior she enjoyed 20 years’ service with Eastern Airlines. After retirement, Helen was tireless in reaching out to family, neighbors, community, and friends, as she shared the bounty of her vegetable and flower gardens and what she preserved and baked.
Marvin loved life and lived it to the fullest! He loved celebrating all things and being with beloved friends and family. He enjoyed Helen’s home made cooking and eating out and always laughed. His entire life, Marvin helped others, especially the “under dog”. He loved NASCAR Racing. Most of all, Marvin loved Helen. He served our country and enjoyed exploring the world while in the Military with the Navy. Marvin made friends everywhere he went and enjoyed lifelong friendships, many lasting after his 20+ year career with Eastern Airlines throughout his retirement to the mountains of North Carolina.
Helen and Marvin’s children are hosting a celebration of their parents’ lives with a reception from 2:00 till 4:00 pm Saturday, July 2, 2023, at Fontana Village Resort in the Carolina Room.
