Johnnie Smith

Retired President

Johnnie Ray Smith is the oldest of three sons of Wallace and Ruth Shuler Smith.  He was raised in Michigan, but moved to Robbinsville, NC, after his parents returned to help care for his grandparents.  He went into the military shortly after moving to North Carolina.  After his military service he married Sandra Crisp, daughter of Booth (Jr.) and Violet Colvard Crisp.  He began working full time at the funeral home in 1978 when he and Wallace bought the business. In 1995 he completed the required courses and received his Funeral Directors License. His main goal in his business has been to be carry on the traditions Wallace envisioned for Townson-Smith Funeral Home in caring for the families touched by grief in the community.  Currently, Johnnie is in the process of retiring.  He is dedicating as much time as possible to his granddaughter, Calin, and doing whatever she asks him to do.

April Smith


April Smith is the daughter of Johnnie and Sandra Crisp Smith and granddaughter of Ruth Shuler Smith and the late Wallace Smith.  She is the third generation of the Smith Family to work  in the Funeral Service Industry.Having grown up around the business, it was a natural course for her to gravitate towards the business as a career.After graduating from Robbinsville High School, April attended Gupton Jones College of Funeral Service.  She received her Funeral Service License in September 1995. April remembers well how Wallace conducted himself and his business.  Today, she is directly involved in the inner workings of Townson-Smith Funeral Home.  She is proud to continue in the footsteps that her father and grandfather have laid before her.In March of 2009, April married Calvin Gladden, who attended Fayetteville Tech and is now licensed in Funeral Service. They have one daughter, Calin Denise Gladden, who was born on May 3, 2012.

Tim Eller

Vice President

Tim Eller is a native of Graham County, and is the son of the late Ray Eller and Virginia (Phillips) and Ken Banks of Toccoa, Ga.  

In February 2008, Tim married Tiffany Ashe from Peachtree.  They live in the Atoah Community in Robbinsville. The Ellers have two children, Rayce Coleman Eller who was born on May 3, 2012, and Raya Addison Eller who was born on May 17, 2014.

Never dreaming of working in the funeral industry, Tim came to work for the Smith Family in late 1998.  Finding that he enjoyed the work, he decided to stay and has found the most rewarding career he could imagine.

In January 1999, Tim began taking classes to get his Funeral Directors License.  He completed the classes in early 2000 and received his Funeral Directors License in July 2000.

Tim feels that God placed him in this position for a reason and is dedicated to doing his best in caring for the families he serves.

Calvin Gladden

Funeral Service Licensee

In March, 2009, April Smith married Calvin Gladden, also a Robbinsville native. After attending Fayetteville Tech, Calvin received his Funeral Service License in 2014. He is a vauled addition to the Townson-Smith Family and works in every aspect of the business. He and April have one daughter, Calin Denise Gladden, who was born on May 3, 2012.


Clyde Collins

Funeral Service Licensee

Clyde Collins is a Graham County native.  He grew up in the Milltown Community in Robbinsville.

He lives in Murphy, NC. Clyde's wife Nora passed away on June 11, 2012. He is the proud grandfather of Tiffany and greatgrandfather of Madison and Payton.

Clyde graduated from Mortuary College in Dallas, TX in 1968 where he served as the class Chaplain.

Clyde began working for the Funeral Home when it was still Townson Funeral Home.  His first day of employment was January 1, 1970.  Throughout the years, Clyde's skills as an embalmer have provided comfort to greiving families.  He is known throughout the area as one of the best at what he does.

He is still actively employed and works for both Townson-Smith Funeral Home in Robbinsville, NC, and Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy, NC.

J.D. Holder

Assistant to the Funeral Director

J.D. Holder was a Graham County native having grown up in the Stecoah Community.He married Ollie Baker Holder.  J.D. retired from the U.S. Navy having served his country proudly for 21 years.  He was widely known in the community as someone who could fix just about anything.  J.D. began working for the Smith Family in 1987 and became a highly valued member of the staff.  In his time working for Townson-Smith, he made countless trips to bring loved ones home.  His compassion and dedication were unparalleled.Though he retired from Townson-Smith Funeral Home, J.D. remained an important part of the Townson-Smith family.  Sadly, he passed away on September 3, 2016 after a period of declining health.  We still miss his wit, his knowledge, and his spirit.

Warner Deyton

Assistant to the Funeral Director

Warner Deyton is a Graham County native. He grew up in the Sweetwater Community in Robbinsville, NC.

He has one daughter, Monica Sawyer, and two grandchildren, Connor and Cassie.

Warner has been an active member of the Graham County Rescue Squad for many years.  He has helped in numerous searches and recovery missions throughout the area.

Warner has helped out at Townson-Smith Funeral Home for many years in times when he was needed.  More recently, he is working more frequently.  

His kind and caring demeanor suit him perfectly to the work he does at the Funeral Home.
